DIE MAKING GLOSSARY

Here are some terms used within the Industry.

Standard Cutting Rule Thicknesses:

  • 1.5pt advantageous for tight bends and narrow areas.
  • 2pt can be for carton boards, polycarb, polypropylene, self-adhesive material etc
  • 3pt suitable for corrugated boards, coreflute, thicker materials.
  • 4pt very heavy duty work available in 23.8mm, 80.0mm and 100mm high

Standard Cutting Rule Heights:

  • 12.0mm purpose built for Reel Fed machines.
  • 23.3mm commonly used for Heidelberg Cylinders and Platens.
  • 23.8mm suitable for Bobst machines and Hand Fed Platens
  • 28.6mm, 31.75mm, 50.0mm, 80.0mm and 100mm Blister Clicking Dies

Creasing Rule:

an abundance of heights available. Height is determined by the cutting rule used and   board thickness.

Perforating Rule:

Used for many purposes, tearing, reverse folding, glueing. Can also be used to emboss product codes into material.

Cut/Crease Rule:

Helps to ensure a positive fold for heavier boards. Available in a variety of heights   and types. e.g  10mm x 10mm  23.8 cut x 23.00 crease.

Scoring Rule:

For heavier boards. Rather than crease, a score cuts half way into the board to enable it to fold.

Wood Thicknesses:

12mm, 15mm and 18mm.

Kiss cutting:

Kiss cut is for most self-adhesive work, where the blade does not cut right through.

Die cutting:

Die cut is when the blade penetrates right through the material for ease of stripping.
